Questions 26-28

The people of Taiwan have something new to be proud of—80 new things to be exact! Scientists have recently discovered 80 new species of sea creatures in the waters surrounding Taiwan. Funded by the National Science Council, the research project began a few years ago. However, at that time, researchers were limited by old technology. In the beginning they could only reach depths of 600 meters below the ocean’s surface. New equipment now allows scientists to explore down to 4,455 meters. That’s where researchers found a kind of deep-sea lobster never seen before.

The project wasn’t limited to the ocean, however. Researchers also explored Taiwan’s famous hot springs and made some interesting discoveries. One of the creatures they found is the first known species of hermit crab to reside in hot springs. Another is a feisty shrimp that sprays a blue substance when danger is near. Even scientists were surprised at some of the creatures they uncovered.

Questions 29-33

In 1818, Dr. Joseph Arnold and his team of researchers were tramping around the Indonesian rainforest when they came across an awful smell. The smell of rotting meat floated through the air. What they found was a new type of flowering plant, the Rafflesia.

The reason why it smells so awful is because the scent attracts insects like flies, which then transport pollen from male to female flowers. It has been nicknamed the “corpse flower” because it not only smells like rotting meat, but also looks like it. It has no stems, leaves, or roots. In fact, the only part of the plant that can be seen outside its vine is the five-petaled flower. In some species, the flower can be over 100 centimeters wide and weigh up to 10 kilograms. Even the smallest species has 20-cm-wide flowers. The Rafflesia, named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, has been classified into 15 to 19 different species. The plant has been found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Questions 37-40

The Internet works great, right? On it, I can watch videos on YouTube, read blog entries, check my email, buy and sell stuff, find information, and much more. So, why do some government and university researchers want to replace the Internet with something new?

Their arguments are as follows: firstly, the way the internet was initially designed left a lot of loopholes open for spammers and hackers to slip through. Remaking it would cut down on the loopholes. Secondly, they want to restructure the way Internet addresses are identified, so wherever your laptop or mobile device is in the wireless world, it can be tracked down. That way your relatives, and the police, can always find you. Thirdly, they want to make it easier for your wireless devices to connect to your toaster and other devices, so that you can make toast from across the room, or perhaps even across the planet.

Critics of this plan point out that businesses and organizations in general will be reluctant to spend time and money replacing all of their applications, which are made to work with the “old” system. Software and hardware companies, privacy advocates, law enforcement agencies, and private industries will all have conflicting demands with the new system. In other words, satisfying all of them may be impossible.

B     39.   What is NOT true according to the article?

(A)   A new Internet would enable wireless devices to be located more easily.

(B)   The switchover to a new Internet would probably go very smoothly.
