Questions 29-33

Hidden deep in the forests of Mexico is an ancient city of stone. Chichen Itza, one of the Maya’s greatest cities, offers a mysterious view of an old civilization. Perhaps the most famous structure is the giant stone pyramid called the Temple of Kukulcan. Kukulcan was a Maya god that looked like a serpent with feathers. On certain days in the spring and autumn, you can see Kukulcan’s shadow on the north staircase.

The ball court is another impressive building. At 168 by 66 meters, it was the largest ball court of its time. Aside from being a sports arena, the Maya believed that the court was a doorway to the underworld. This may be partly because the captain of the losing team was killed.

The way the buildings were built is almost as impressive as the buildings themselves. The massive stone blocks were carved using tools made of wood and stone because the Maya had no metal. Questions 37-40

If you haven’t been to Kaohsiung in a few years, then the city that would now welcome you might seem unrecognizable. The place that city mayor Chen Chu said used to be like a “heavy industrial kitchen full of soot and oily smoke,” has been named by Commonwealth magazine as a top spot for environmental protection.

Much of Kaohsiung’s green facelift revolves around the Love River and its green spaces. The restoration of the river included improving the city’s sewage system, as well as getting rid of some of the pollutants in the water. In turn, this has completely changed the face of the city, as the river now provides a popular focal point for locals and tourists alike, with bicycle paths and spaces for public art. Furthermore, Kaohsiung’s urban-renewal plan has brought greenery to the city, with lots of trees having been planted. In fact, over the last three years, the city government has created 766 hectares of park, partly by restoring unused plots of land throughout the city. That’s equal to about 29 parks the size of Da-an Forest Park. It seems that Kaohsiung is now set to lead the country in much more than heavy industry.

37. What does the writer suggest in the opening paragraph?

(A) The city has become much worse.

(B) Kaohsiung has completely changed.

(C) Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s most welcoming city.

(A) The sewage system has been improved.

(B) The majority of the factories have been closed.

(C) The nearby buildings have been cleaned.

(D) The water has had pollutants added.

39. What is NOT a way in which the city has become greener?

(A) New parks have been created in the city.

(B) Unused land has been converted.

(C) Cars have been limited in the city.

(D) Many new trees have been planted.

40. What is the best description of this article?

(A) An editor’s comments in a nature journal.

(B) A report on Kaohsiung politics.

(C) A scientific research paper.

(D) A feature article of national interest.
