Questions 26-28

Until now, all scientists had to go on when studying dinosaurs were fossil remains. It was once thought that any organic or biological material from these specimens would have deteriorated long ago, eliminating any possibility of studying it. However, a new discovery has changed all that. In the US, scientists have identified proteins in a well-preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex that lived 68 million years ago. To put this in perspective, the oldest proteins previously found were from mammoths that died about 300,000 years ago.

Analysis of the proteins from the T-Rex’s thigh bone revealed new evidence of a link between dinosaurs and birds. In this case, three of the seven reconstructed protein sequences were closely related to chickens. This is an important finding, because it shows that “biomolecules could be stable over this long period of time,” said Mark A. Norell, a dinosaur expert at the American Museum of Natural History.

26. What is the main purpose of this passage?

      (A) To get people interested in studying dinosaurs.

Questions 37-40

Without the sun, there would be no life on Earth. Although we should be thankful for the sun, we must also be very careful. Every year, millions of people are affected by skin cancer, which can be caused by getting too much sunlight. What can we do to protect ourselves this summer?

There are three important ways to make sure that we have safe fun in the sun. The first is to cover up! If you’re out in the sun, it’s good to wear a hat. Don’t just wear a baseball cap, but something to protect your ears and neck as well. Long-sleeved shirts will keep your arms safe too.

Another way to avoid the harmful effects of the sun is to wear sunscreen. Make sure to apply it 20 minutes before going out into the sun. Also, swimming or sweating a lot can wash away the sunscreen, so make sure to put some more on afterwards.

The last way to keep safe is the simplest: stay in the shade! Try not to go outside too much between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the most dangerous. Follow these three rules to make sure that your skin is safe while you play this summer!
